Event Description
PROWOOD 2027: Advancing Sustainable Wood Science and Innovation
Date: October 17–21, 2027
Location: Ghent, Belgium
PROWOOD 2027, the International Conference on Wood Science and Technology, will convene in Ghent, Belgium, from October 17–21, 2027. Hosted by Ghent University—a global leader in forestry and biomaterials research—this premier event will gather 500+ researchers, industry leaders, policymakers, and innovators to address the future of wood as a sustainable resource. The conference theme, "Wood in a Circular Bioeconomy: Innovations for Resilience," reflects the urgent need for transformative solutions in forestry, materials science, and environmental stewardship.
Key Focus Areas
PROWOOD 2027 will explore cutting-edge advancements across four core tracks:
1. Sustainable Forest Management: Climate-resilient silviculture, biodiversity conservation, and carbon sequestration strategies.
2. Wood Modification & Processing: Innovations in nanotechnology, bio-based composites, and digital manufacturing (e.g., AI-driven timber optimization).
3. Circular Economy Applications: Upcycling wood waste into high-value products (e.g., bioplastics, construction materials) and life-cycle assessment frameworks.
4. Policy & Market Integration: EU Green Deal alignment, certification schemes (PEFC/FSC), and scaling bio-based economies globally.
Program Highlights
The agenda includes keynote addresses by Nobel laureates in environmental science, interactive workshops on timber engineering, and a "Bio-Innovation Fair" showcasing startups in wood-derived tech. Special sessions will address pressing challenges like deforestation in the tropics and the role of wood in carbon-neutral construction. Participants can engage in field visits to Ghent’s historic timber port and the university’s advanced wood composites lab.
Why Ghent?
As a hub for sustainable industry and green research, Ghent offers a unique backdrop. The city’s commitment to circularity (e.g., its "Wood for Good" initiative) and proximity to Europe’s largest timber ports ensures seamless industry-academia collaboration. Belgium’s strategic location also facilitates global participation, with Brussels’ policy influence enhancing discussions on regulatory frameworks.
Expected Outcomes
PROWOOD 2027 aims to:
- Foster interdisciplinary partnerships between academia and industry.
- Launch the "Wood Innovation Roadmap 2030," setting targets for carbon-negative materials.
- Position wood science as central to achieving UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 12 (Responsible Consumption) and 13 (Climate Action).
Registration & Participation
Early registration opens in January 2027. Student grants and industry sponsorships are available. For details, visit [www.prowood2027.org](http://www.prowood2027.org).
PROWOOD 2027 will not only shape the future of wood science but also accelerate the global transition toward a sustainable, bio-based economy. Join us in Ghent to build a greener world, plank by plank.
